How to upgrade computer? Well, that is one of the most asked questions that I get when working on older machines. The user almost always thinks that it is easier to just upgrade the computer than it is to just buy a new one. Well, in some ways it is easier, but it is not the most cost effective. This does however depend on the age of the machine and what component that they are wanting to replace. Most often times memory is the first thing that gets upgraded. Then later on they might want a video card upgrade or possibly a processor upgrade if at all possible. When you get into upgrading all of those components, you might as well just bite the bullet and buy another computer. So how to upgrade a computer in a lot of cases is just buy a new one.
In most cases when you upgrade the memory in a computer you are talking about a price range from about 30 to 80 dollars. It is as simple as just opening the cover and sticking the memory in the appropriate socket. The sockets will be labeled DIMM 1 or DIMM 2 and so on. Most machines only have between 2 and 4 sockets. Sometimes you might get 1 or 3. If you have a laptop and you are upgrading the memory in that then you are going to see SODIMM beside the socket. Sometimes they do not even have that labeled on the laptops because the boards are small and they leave no room for much else. This just depends though. I have seen them like this before. A memory socket looks like no other socket. So, it is not hard to differentiate between a DIMM socket and any other socket on the motherboard. If you need help in doing this then just check out some youtube videos of someone installing some memory. There are plenty of these such videos on the internet to give you a hand.
Another key component that is upgraded is the video card. Most of the time unless you specifically order a computer with a souped up card you will get just onboard video. The video cards that are on the motherboards are not gaming cards at all. They mostly will just run your basic web applications and play your basic video files and thats about it. A good video card is always going to cost you around 250 to 300 dollars. Now, note that a very souped up card will cost anywhere from 500 to 700 dollars possibly more, but you just want an upgrade and the chances are you are not going to be able to run a graphics card of that calibur without changing your power supply out and possibly your board itself. So, stick with the 250 to 300 dollar range and you should be getting a real good card for your money without having to do too much to your computer. As I said before. If you are going to be changing out more than 2 components out of your computer, then it is most likely cheaper for you to buy another computer and scrap the old one. You can sell your old clunker on ebay and have that money go towards the purchase of another computer.
