Sometimes the antivirus cannot without the help of the user to identify dangerous or not this or that program. Some programs have a set of functions that can cause harm to the user only when certain conditions are met. Moreover, such programs can be legally sold and used in everyday work, such as system administrators. However, in the hands of an attacker, such programs can turn into a tool with which to harm the unsuspecting user.
Such program is Adware.
Adware (Adware, Advware, Spyware, Browser Hijackers) is designed to display advertising messages – often in the form of graphic banners – and redirect search requests to advertising web page.
With the exception of ad impressions, such programs usually does not manifest its presence in the system – there is no icon in the system tray, there is any mention about the installed files in the programs menu. Often Adware-programs do not have uninstalled procedure.
Penetration.
On users’ computers Adware comes in two ways:
- By embedding advertising components in free and shareware software (freeware, shareware);
- Through the installation of unauthorized advertising components when a user visits “infected” web pages.
Most freeware and shareware programs stop showing advertising after their purchase and / or registration. Such programs often use built-Adware-party utilities. In some cases, Adware-tools are installed on the user’s computer, and after the registration of programs with which they originally came into the operating system. In this case, removal of Adware-component, still used by some adware, may disrupt the functioning of this program.
The basic purpose of this type of Adware – an implicit form of payment software, implemented by the user to display advertising media (advertisers pay per impression advertising their advertising agency, advertising agency – the developer Adware). Adware helps to reduce costs as software developers (income from Adware encourages them to write new and improve existing programs), and by the users.
If you install the advertising component when a user visits “infected” web pages in most cases hacking technologies are used: penetration into the computer through security holes in Internet browser, as well as the use of Trojans designed to install hidden software (Trojan-Downloader or Trojan-Dropper). Adware-program operating in this manner, often referred to as Browser Hijackers.
Delivery advertising.
There are two main ways to deliver advertising information:
- Download advertising texts and images from a Web or FTP-server belonging to the advertiser;
- Redirection of search queries an Internet browser to an advertising website.
Redirecting requests in some cases only occurs when there are no user-requested Web pages, in error in the set page address.
Leaks.
Many advertising delivery system in addition to advertising also collect sensitive information about your computer and the user:
- IP-address of the computer;
- Version of the operating system and Internet browser;
- A list of frequently visited by the user of Internet resources;
- Searches;
- Other data that can be used in subsequent campaigns.
For this reason, Adware-program is frequently called Spyware (not to be confused with Spyware adware with Trojan-Spy).
